Galapagos Islands, Assessment of Damage from Tsunami

The Galapagos National Park Service has conducted a preliminary analysis of the the impact the tsunami has had on the protected area including tourist sites.

The area in Santa Cruz for tortoise breeding has been closed due to damage. Many of the tortoises are being housed in a shelter.

Most impacted areas:
Southwest side of San Cristobal Island – Islas Lobos y Manglecito
Santa Cruz – The beach at El Garrapatero has suffered environmental and infrastructure damage. A crack joined the sea with a flamingo lagoon. También se constató que sitios de anidación de tortugas marinas fueron destruidos por el oleaje. It was also found that nesting sites of sea turtles were destroyed by waves.

Flamingo Lagoon has sustained some damage as well as other areas populated by tortoises.
