Ecuadorian Sentenced to Death in United States for Murders

According to ElComercio.com Quito native, Ecuador Nelson Ivan Serrano was sentenced to death for the murders of four people in Florida December 1997. His nephew, Alfredo Luna says if Serrano’s defense team does not present an appeal by the next 12th of September, Serrano will be listed for execution in Florida. The article says that Serrano went to the United States looking for work and has lived in Florida for 47 years. Luna says the Ecuadorian government offered help and support for Serrano’s defense, however it has not followed through with this promise. The Ecuadorian government has responded that they sent a letter to Mr. Serrano’s lawyer saying that government institutions had declined the funds for an appeal. Additionally, Luna says the government did not provide a refund for the original trial, which was promised. Serrano was arrested by a joint operation between Ecuadorian and United States police officials in Ecuador and then extradited to the United States.Read Article
