Ecuador: Yasunidos file appeal in denial of referendum on oil drilling

WSJ.COM REPORTED…A coalition trying to halt oil drilling in one of Ecuador’s most environmentally sensitive spots submitted an appeal Wednesday to force a referendum on the future of the area. The YasUnidos coalition submitted the appeal after Ecuador’s electoral council rejected a request for a referendum on whether to drill in the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini, or ITT, oil block. The coalition said Ecuador’s government pressured the electoral council into preventing a referendum on the ITT development, and claimed there was fraud during a recent process to validate signatures that were submitted to the National Electoral Council.
