Ecuador: Ruling Party Pais Alliance seeking to make 16 amendments to 2008 constitution

TELESURTV.NET REPORTED….Proposed amendment will remove term limits for elected officials, allowing Ecuadoreans to decide their leaders through a popular vote. Doris Soliz, Executive Secretary of the ruling party of Ecuador, PAIS Alliance, spoke in favor of expanding the democratic options of the Ecuadorean people through the constitutional amendments being proposed by the party.

In an interview with EcuadorTV, Solis stated “The concept of greater democracy is through the popular vote of the Ecuadorean people, without any restrictions.” PAIS Alliance is seeking to make 16 amendments to the 2008 constitution, with a further 10 to 12 waiting to be discussed by the Constitutional Court, with the most polemical being the proposal to remove term limits for elected officials. The Constitutional Court determined earlier this month that the first batch of constitutional amendments could be decided by the internal government vote, and not through a public referendum.

The opposition in Ecuador has pushed for the amendments to be decided through a referendum.
