Ecuador: Relocation of President’s Headquarters

According to ElComercio.com President Rafael Correa has announced in May that the presidential headquarters will be moved from the Carondelet Palace to a complex in Epiclachima barracks located in south Quito. El Comercio reports that a debate has begun surrounding the history of Plaza Grande and relocation of the government headquarters. Ecuadorian historian, David Gomez says that the governments’ move will not mean a loss of identity for Ecuador. Gomez adds that the Palace will still hold the same historic image for Ecuadorians and tourists who flock to Plaza Grande daily. Others disagree saying that the government’s occupancy of the Palace shows respect for the history of Ecuador including the monuments surrounding the Palace.
