Ecuador: Push is on to have more national products on shelves by 2017

telesurtv.net reported – A cultural shift is underway in Ecuador, so that consumers trust buying Ecuadorean products. Production fairs put on by the government allow citizens to learn more about products of medium and small scale producers, so that when they go to the supermarket the recognize the products, and want to buy local.

“The evaluation which has been done in this first semester of 2015 on the buying the supermarkets have done in relation to the first semester of 2014, before this manual existed, which uses the data which the supermarkets have given us, show that they have surpassed almost US$300 million additional dollars buying from producers who gross less than US$1 million a year, so we are talking about the very small, small and medium producers,” said Superintendent for Control of Market Power Pedro Paéz to teleSUR English.

The market regulators require that all national products have special packaging so that they are visible in supermarkets. The goal is that one third of all items in the nation’s largest supermarket chains will be of small and medium scale producers by 2017. Read Article
