Ecuador makes significant strides in poverty reduction

TELESUR.NET REPORTED Policies focused on inequality and heightened social and economic investment have led to a reduction in poverty in Ecuador. Ecuador has made important strides in poverty reduction and policies focusing on inequality since President Rafael Correa’s election in 2007. By restructuring external debt, Ecuador has managed to save and invest US$8 billion dollars in the public sector, and 1,137,000 Ecuadorians have come out of poverty.

“We have the highest public investment in Latin America, public investment which is at 15 percent of the gross national product. We have this public investment so that we can have better highways, so that there are health centers, so that there are what we call “Millennium Schools” of very high quality in the most abandoned part of the country where the state never reached,” said Ana Maria Larrea, Ecuador’s Technical Secretary for Poverty Eradication in an interview with TeleSUR English.
