Ecuador: Government claims “begging” has dropped 76.4 percent since 2010

One of the most notable achievements of the Citizen’s Revolution in Ecuador has been the marked drop in extreme poverty, which has translated in a significant drop in people begging on streets.

The latest figures from the Ministry of Social and Economic Inclusion state that begging has dropped 76.4 percent since 2010. In the year 2007, the first year of the government of Rafael Correa and the Citizen’s Revolution, the ministry set out to gradually eradicate begging by offering programs and assistance to those who depended on the income from begging.
