Ecuador is regional leader for gender equity in politics

Ecuadorean lawmakers ratified Thursday three women to head up the country’s National Assembly, including Gabriela Rivadeneira from the leftist PAIS Alliance as President of the legislative body. “We seek to strengthen the public, and the capacity to decide our own future,” Rivadeneira said after securing the vote of 103 lawmakers in the 137 seat assembly. The 31-year-old legislator has already headed the assembly for two years, and is among the most popular figures in the governing party. Women also hold over 40 percent of the seats in the National Assembly, and nearly half of the country’s National Court of Justice.
