Ecuador: Increased Seismic Activity at Tungurahua Volcano

The Geophysical Institute of Ecuador reported on Sunday increased seismic activity inside the volcano Tungurahua, in the Andean center of the country, and estimated a possible reactivation of the colossus within “immediate short”.

“Since September 24 at 14h00 (local time) has it registered a further increase in internal seismic activity of the volcano in the number of earthquakes LP (long period) and episodes of tremor in near the crater areas , ” he said organism in a special report.

He added that “taking into account the sharp increase in the last days of the seismic activity is estimated that a revival of immediate short term (next days to hours) is possible.”

The Geophysics Institute said the most likely scenario is “a quick recovery (…) with a large eruption column and pyroclastic flows , ” but does not rule out a gradual process with moderate explosions and ash falls.

The report indicates that there have been reports of surface activity on the volcano, as ashfall.

Tungurahua, which in Quechua language means “throat of fire”, is one of eight active volcanoes in Ecuador, near the Cotopaxi, the Reventador and Sangay.

The colossus of 5,020 meters, located 130 km south of Quito, in the province of the same name, recorded since 1999 a batch process of eruption.

Its highest peak activity occurred in 2006, when it killed six people in a village in Chimborazo that was devastated by landslides caused by the expulsion of lava. Read Article
