Ecuador: Health Ministry expects to vaccinate 96% of dogs and cats against rabies

The country has not had cases of urban rabies transmitted by dogs and cats since 1996. For this reason Carlos Guevara Molina , National Director of Prevention and Control Strategies of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), has called on health personnel to promote The vaccination of these animals and prevent that disease.

“It is important the support of all doctors in the country,” although this campaign is organized interinstitutionally with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Veterinary Faculties of several universities (public) and the MSP, has mentioned the official to MEDICAL EDUCATION.

According to Guevara, it is expected to vaccinate more than two million dogs and cats to prevent the redistribution of urban rabies in the national territory. Nevertheless, it clarified that the wild still exists mainly by bite of bats in the Amazon.

The country has not yet been declared rabies free by the World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) but, thanks to the organization’s plan, there have been no cases of dog or cat bites, the director said.

The MSP has invested $ 834,941 in immunizations for some 2,207,000 dogs and 220,000 cats, which is projected to vaccinate 96 percent of animals .
