Ecuador, : Doctor and nurse get four-year prison sentences for injecting patient with adrenaline

Former Quito Military Hospital doctor and nurse Andrea Merizalde and Elsa Gueva Montesdeoca were tried in absentia by the Pinchincha Fifth Tribunal and given four-year sentences to be served at a Quito women’s prison, for the manslaughter of Andrea Saá Toro.

According to the sentence, Saá Toro checked in to the hospital on 28th May 2009 for allergy treatments; two days later smelling her breakfast, fish caused an allergic reaction. Doctor Merizalde ordered Gueva Montesdeoca to inject Saá Toro with racemic adrenaline via I.V. The nurse balked, but complied; the adrenaline was intended for inhalation rather than I.V.
