revistalideres.ec reported Ecuador’s customs service began using a new baggage control system today. The goal of the new system is to optimize the experience of passengers who arrive in Ecuador, and hopefully reduce the waiting time for luggage checks/inspections in customs. Quito’s airport provided a demonstration today.

The passenger’s passport is scanned to determine the type of check that will be made, based on the person’s determined level of risk. The system analyzes the passenger’s profile and previous trips. When scanning the passport, a signal will appear that can be green, yellow or red. Each color corresponds to a level of risk. If the green signal appears, an inspection of the luggage is not necessary and the passenger is authorized to leave. A yellow signal requires a luggage check with the use of the X-ray machine. If any questionable article is detected, an examination of the suitcases will be carried out. A red signal means there will be a detailed inspection of the luggage.

The new system is already being implemented at the Quito airport. Guayaquil’s airport, a pilot program is being used. This new system is expected to become the norm in the coming weeks. Read Article
