Ecuador: Correa, Media’s Offer of Conciliation ‘Way to Late’

According to ElComercio.com the media organization, El Universo presented a proposal to rectify an opinion article entitled, ‘No a las mentiras,’ or ‘No to lying,’ today Tuesday July 19th. However, El Universo’s proposal was ‘very late’ according to Correa and was not accepted says the President attorney, Alembert Vera. Correa is asking for $80 million in fines from El Universo and a three-year prison sentence for Emilio Palacio, the author of the article and three directors of the paper, Carlos, Cesar and Nicolas Perez. During a closed-door session today, which included the President and the Perez family, Nicolas Perez twitted that the President listened intently to El Universo’s offering an apology as he turned down the offer of conciliation. El Ciudadano, the government media organization reports El Universo’s offer was not a rectification and therefore was not accepted.
