Ecuador: 47 deaths reported during Carrnival holiday

radiohcjb.org/ElTelégrafo.com reported the Monitoring Unit Adverse Event (Umeva) of the Department of Risk Management (SGR) reports 47 deaths in various events during the Carnival holidays, according to the authorities said Wednesday. At the press conference it was reported 652 wounded, 14 affected by intoxication and 7 missing in the aquatic environment. Authorities said the fatalities, 24 are from traffic accidents. However, this figure is lower compared to the same period in 2014 when 39 deaths were reported, said Jose Luis Asencio, secretary of the SGR. The balance also notes that the total number of deaths, 13 were by drowning; 7 social violence, and 3 alcohol intake.

In relation to the injured, 515 were from traffic accidents, 127 social violence and 10 structural fires. Mariana Piguave, undersecretary of response agency, said the contingency plan included 26,806 people, including volunteers, firemen, doctors and technicians, employing 4,323 vehicles to travel by air, sea and land and 5,700 computers to facilitate care for people affected.
