Ecuador, 370,000 Youths Part of Work Force

  • Sunday, June 12th the World Day Against Child Labor was held by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports LaHora.com.ec.
  • 13% of the Ecuadorian workforce is made up of children between 5 and 17.
  • Most work in agriculture, some work in mining or construction illegally.
  • Families force their children to earn money.
  • Ecuador’s minimum age of employment is 15. Teenagers are allowed to work after school hours and only six hours a day. Insurance is required.
  • Child labor in Ecuador has been reduced from 700,000 in 2001 to 370,000 in 2011. Social investment on part of the government has contributed to the reduction says the organization, Global March Against Child Labor.
  • Child labor is most prevalent in indigenous populations.
  • 2010, the government worked with UNICEF on a campaign to eradicate child workers in the garbage industry.
