Drugs Seized in Venezuela, Destination: Holland and Australia

On May 21, 2013 Prensa Latina reported that members of the Venezuelan National Guard seized several kilos of cocaine at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, Vargas. The National Anti-dug Office stated that 13.6 kilos of cocaine were hidden in clothing packages, and 1.29 kilos were found hidden in bathroom accessories, both packages were in route to Holland. During the inspection, another package was detected on its way to Australia that contained 1.5 kilos of cocaine. Despite its lack of drug production, Venezuela finds itself a key territory for drug trafficking routes from South America to the United States. The Venezuelan government has signed 52 agreements with 38 nations, and works alongside Italy, Guyana, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Portugal, Colombia, and Bolivia in joint committees in order to combat drug trafficking.
