Dengue Cases in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Pass Last Year’s Total by February

On February 28, 2013, R7 reported that the number of dengue cases in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais has surged to 48,720 cases as of the end of February.  This number already has passed the number of cases reported in the state in all of last year (46,681).  The city of Uberaba alone has reported six deaths due to the disease.  According to the State Secretary of Health, two of the causes attributed to the spike include the re-emergence of a certain type of dengue that puts citizens under 30 especially at risk, as well as the transition of power between mayors of various cities and the lack of attention to the spread of dengue.  Read Article
