Deadly Disease Strikes Tzucacab, Mexico

The director of the Center for Health in Tzucacab, Mexico has reported four positive cases of Chagas disease, the Diario de Yucatán reports. The disease is transmitted by a small insect known as a “pic.” Once it bites a human, it can transmit parasites which cause Chagas disease. The disease can cause blindness, swelling of the heart and liver, and if not treated promptly, death can result. It is especially dangerous because most people do not show any initial symptoms after they are bitten. An estimated 15 to 17 million people are infected with Chagas disease every year, of which 50,000 die. It is most common in rural areas of Latin America. Read Article
