Colombian Cartel Fragmentation Creates Opportunity for Mexican Drug Traffickers

After a recent Mexican plane crash in Ecuador associated with drug trafficking, experts predict a larger sphere of Mexican influence in Latin America concerning the illicit drug trade, reports Radio Nederland Wereldomroep Latinoamerica on May 23, 2012. Although this assumption cannot be definitively proven, the fragmentation of Colombian drug trafficking organizations has required and allowed greater Mexican involvement. Previously, Mexican groups had a rather secondary role as those responsible for transportation of drugs, particularly cocaine. Colombia controlled the primary production function. Now, however, there is a need for stronger international alliances between these organizations in order to compensate for fragmentation and to ensure supply meets demand in receiving countries such as the United States.
