Colombia begins manual coca eradication along Ecuadorian border

Colombian officials hope to eradicate 5,000 hectares of illegal coca plantations along the Ecuadorian border by October 15, 2012. This plan calls for manual destruction of the crops, according to Fox News Latino. The areas in focus include Narino, Putumayo, and Guaviare, where officials say coca production increased dramatically between 2010 and 2011. In 2007, Colombian officials attempted to spray chemicals on plants along the border region, but ceased after Ecuadorians complained about contamination. Read Article
