Colombia- 25% of Inmates Incarcerated for Illegal Possession of Firearms

According to Caracol.com, on January 11, 2012 in Colombia the director of Inpec, General Gustavo Ricaurte has stated that an excessive 25,000 prisoners are being held in prison for illegal possessions of firearms. According to the General, the prison population of inmates charged with illegal possession or trafficking of weapons represents 25% of both men and women of inmates within the prison. The General stated that the substantial increase was solely due to illegal possession of firearms. However, according to the General it will help combat and deter the illegal sale in black market.
