On June 6, 2013 RPP Noticias reported that so far this year 291 people have been reported missing from the city of Chiclayo, Peru. This data was compiled by the Divincri Missing Persons and Human Trafficking Unit in Chiclayo. Divincri chief, Colonel Isaac Alvarado, stated that they deal with between 10 and 15 cases weekly, most of whom are girls who are picked up by pimps and gangs engaged in trafficking in other regions of the country.

According to the police report, the majority of the cases involve minors between 15-17 years old who ran away from their homes after being abused by their parents. However, the police also reported cases involving adolescents who have fallen into a life of crime and, in recent cases, elderly who find themselves on the streets after being abandoned by their families.
