Brazilian Political Parties Transfer R$61 Million to Other Parties in 2012

On February 11, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that Brazilian political parties made contributions totaling some R$61 million to political campaigns other than their own in the year 2012. The largest contributions were made by the Workers’ Party (PT), who gave some R$6 million to three political parties who agreed to support the candidacy of Fernando Haddad (PT-SP) to the mayor’s office in São Paulo. The PT also gave R$2 million to help Gustavo Fruet (PDT-PR) become mayor of Curitiba, capital of the state of Paraná.
