BRAZIL: Two Lula Loyalists Head to Prison for Active Corruption

Notícias de Hoy reported that the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court sentenced two members of the Brazilian Workers’ Party for their respective roles in the “Mensalão” scandal, conducted under the term of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. José Dirceu, then-Chief of Staff to President Lula, and José Genoíno, then-President of the Workers’ Party, were found guilty of using public funds to purchase votes from legislators who were part of Lula’s governing coalition in the Chamber of Deputies. These votes were secured to pass legislation proposed by the President. Dirceu was sentenced to ten years, eleven months in prison, while Genoíno received six years, eleven months.
