Brazil: Son of Renan Calheiros Accused of Using Public Money to Pay Attorneys

On February 6, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that Renan Filho (PMDB-AL), federal deputy and son of newly elected President of the Federal Senate Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL), used public money to pay lawyers who represented him and his father in private matters. This money came from allowances that federal deputies and senators receive to travel and stay when outside of Brasília and their districts. Renan Filho responded to the allegations, saying that the services were related to his own business in the government. The law firm in question, Omena Barretos Advogados Associados, stated that the money came directly from Renan Filho, not from any government transfers.  Read Article
