BRAZIL: Online Poll Conducted to Determine Most Corrupt Politician of 2012

On January 4, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that the July 31 Movement (Movimento 31 de Julho) launched a poll on Facebook to survey public perceptions on the most corrupt politicians in Brazil. Named the Golden Handcuffs Trophy (Troféu Algemas de Ouro), the poll runs until January 15, with results announced on January 20. Included in the list are Demóstenes Torres, expelled from the Senate this year for his involvement with disgraced businessman Carlinhos Cachoeira, ex-President Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva, and longtime São Paulo political figurehead Paulo Maluf.
