Brazil: Former Economic Development Minister Suspected of Corruption Charges in Santos

On January 11, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that Paulo Alexandre Barbosa (PSDB), former Economic Development Minister of the state of São Paulo, was implicated for helping in the scandal that triggered Operation Porto Seguro.  Barbosa currently serves as the mayor of Santos, a port city about 80 kilometers from São Paulo.  The police investigation found that Barbosa was connected to former senator Gilberto Miranda (PMDB) in a scheme to procure more than R$1 billion in public funds to undertake a port development project in Santos.  Paulo Vieira, ex-director of the National Water Agency and also connected to the scheme, confirmed that Barbosa was involved.  Read Article
