On January 10, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that Brazil’s Attorney General, Roberto Gurgel, made a formal petition Tuesday to send federal deputy Natan Donadon (PMDB-RO) to prison immediately.  Donadon was convicted in 2010 of a scheme in which he helped to divert R$8.4 million from state coffers in the state of Rondônia between 1995 and 1998.  He was sentenced then to 13 years, 4 months and 10 days in prison by the Supreme Federal Tribunal.  Because Donadon’s case is under appeal, he has not gone to prison, thus allowing him to serve in public office.  Gurgel maintained that keeping Donadon in detention does not violate the presumption of innocence principle.  Read Article
