At Least 13 Brazilian States to be Investigated for School Lunch Fraud

On April 9, 2013, O Globo reported that state and federal public ministries throughout Brazil are investigating the quality of public school lunches.  Authorities noticed irregularities in Espírito Santo last week regarding diversion of funds and the mishandling of food, but investigations are also being launched in 12 other states.  In the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the town of São José do Campestre, authorities found a lack of food in seven different schools, leading to the closing of five.  Police found instances of lunches prepared with well water in other cases, instead of filtered clean water.  Read Article
