Arizona Prime Location for Mexican Drug Trafficking with 23% of Border Drugs

El Universal released a report May 22, 2012 claiming Arizona has become a prime location for drug trafficking between the United States and Mexico, particularly the cities of Phoenix and Tucson. 53% of all drug money seized in 2011 along the border between the two countries was discovered in Arizona, and 23% of all drugs seized in this year were found in Arizona. The state serves as an optimal location for trafficking due to its desert regions. The Sinaloa cartel dominates the area closest to Arizona, making the state prone to methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine and heroin trafficking. From Arizona, the illicit drugs can be distributed throughout the rest of the country. The Bureau of Immigration and Customs enforcement reports 139 tons of marijuana, 2.4 tons of cocaine, 589 kilos of methamphetamine, and 192 kilos of heroin were seized in 2011 in Arizona.
