Argentina, 80 thousand sex workers in 5 provinces

A report from the Association of Argentine Prostitutes (Ammar), a member of the Headquarters of Argentine Workers, shows that there are 80 thousand sexual workers in the 5 most important provinces in the country: the Federal Capital, Buenos Aires province, Córdoba, Mendoza and Santa Fe. Sixty-thousand of those come from the poorest areas of the provinces and 93% are the head of a household. Ammar has proposed a bill, set to reach congress next year, that would regulate the working conditions for sex workers, focussing on personal health and safety, says eltribuno.com. Prostitution is a taxable job in some European countries, and while unlikely for that to happen in Argentina, Ammar wants the police to play a lesser role in regulating the industry and have the Ministry of Health step up. Child sex workers, however, will not be included in the bill because any sex worker under the age of 18 is completely illegal in Argentina. The country is labeled as a popular destination for sex tourism, but is dedicated to the fight against the sexual exploitation of children.
