Anti-Drunk Driving Operation in Brazil Arrests 400 During Carnaval

On February 11, 2013, G1 reported that police in the state of Rio Grande do Sul performed over 4,000 breathalyzer tests on motorists traveling to and from Carnaval over the weekend. In the end, they took some 400 drivers off of the roads. Of those 400, 136 were processed and fined, as part of the government’s new Lei Seca. Also of note in the report is that drunk driving accidents accounted for 18 deaths across the state that same weekend.
