Ecuador: Correa Warns Galapagos Islands In Jeopardy, Illegal Migration

According to Cre.com.ec the administration of Rafael Correa is carefully watching the situation of illegal migration to the Galapagos Islands. On Friday June 3rd, President Rafael Correa announced that the environment of the Galapagos Islands would collapse if more illegal migration occurred. Officials announced the start of an investigation of residents in the Galapagos to validate the legality of current residents on the Islands. Correa says that rights on the islands are more limited, however this is necessary in order to preserve the environment. The Ecuadorian government will only investigate people migrating to the Islands after the 1998 enactment of the Special Law for the Galapagos. Officials reiterate that the special law limits the rights of internal migration, work or other private and public activities that could affect the Island’s environment.Read Article
