  • UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon will lead a session with the President of Ecuador Rafael Correa to promote Ecuador’s environmental plan and preserving Yasuni Park during the next UN General Assembly in September.
  • The head of the Yasuni program, Ivonne Baki said that Ban suggested the idea.
  • Reportedly, during a visit to Ecuador this past February, Ban anticipated the need to speak with the member states to organize funding for the project.
  • A new discussion with Germany, who recently said that they were not going to help fund the Ecuadorian program, is beginning with the help of Ban.
  • It is reported Correa is upset that the funding, to reach a USD 100 million, has not meet the requirement. The goal is to have the total by December 2011.
  • If not achieved the government will exploit the reserves.
  • Baki states the deadline will be extended six or seven months.Read Article
