San Jose, Costa Rica: Dismantled Gang Used Mail Service to Traffic Drugs

From lainformacion.com on August 28, 2013- Authorities in Costa Rica dismantled an international drug trafficking gang that was using the postal service to send and receive drugs. The group was led by one Lithuanian and two Romanians who had recruited officials from the state-owned postal service. This organization shows the continued “diversification” of drug trafficking methods by using small packages rather than large shipments. According to authorities, cocaine was being sent to Nicaragua and Europe from Costa Rica, and ecstasy was being brought into Costa Rica from the Netherlands and Germany. In total, police seized 1.57 kilos of cocaine and 11,109 doses of ecstasy. While those numbers appear small, government officials said that the cocaine would have been worth $100,000 in Europe and the ecstasy worth $22,000 in the Costa Rican market. Read Article
