Mato Grosso, Brazil: Drug Abuse Grows in Indigenous Communities

midianews.com.br reported on June 2, 2013 that in Mato Grosso; a state with one of the highest numbers of indigenous people, Indians are suffering from drug addiction; primarily that of cocaine base paste and crack. The government is still uncertain of how to effectively identify and handle the situation. Lectures in such communities have been unsuccessful as Indians continue to abuse drugs. An explanation for such results may be due to the lack of skilled individuals permanently working in such areas. A program is currently being coordinated to include about 300 professionals – doctors, dentists, and nurses – who are familiar with how to properly care for Indian drug abuse. Read Article
