Guatemala Travel Advice November 12, 2012

Foreign & Commonwealth Office reported on 7 November a strong earthquake struck off the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, principally affecting the Departments of San Marcos, Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango, El Quiche, Retalhuleu, Solola, Totonicapan and Suchitepequez. Aftershocks are still being felt. On 8 November the President declared “State of Public Calamity” for 30 days in order for the local authorities to coordinate relief and reconstruction efforts in the most affected Departments. There has been significant damage to infrastructure and transportation routes. Travel disruption is still likely in the most affected areas. The rainy season in Guatemala normally runs from June to November, coinciding with the hurricane season in the Caribbean.
