According to ElUniverso.com the ex-captain of the Peruvian Army Telmo Hurtado returned to Peru after being extradited from Miami, this past Thursday July 14th. Hurtado is the main suspect in the slaughter of 69 peasants in the Ayacucho community of Accomarca during the search for members of the Shining Path in August 1985. During the same year the Peruvian Senate investigated the mass murder that occurred in Accomarca, meeting with Hurtado who witnesses say showed no remorse for his actions. In 1993, Hurtado was sentenced to six years in prison for abuse of authority. However, in 1996 President Alberto Fujimori instituted the Amnesty Law, allowing Hurtado to rejoin the army. Finally in 2001, the Commission of Truth and Reconciliation began investigating the Accomarca case and Hurtado fled to the United States. On Friday, July 15th, Hurtado was presented before the National Criminal Court to begin the proceedings for his trial.Read Article
