River rafting suspended for tourists this winter in Mendoza, Argentina

Posted on July 15, 2011 • Filed under: Agriculture, Argentina, TRAVEL

Tourists in San Rafael, Mendoza this season will be missing out on one of the classic winter activities for the area: rafting down the Atuel River. According to losandes.com.ar, tourism providers did not get court approval to suspend the water restrictions placed on the river this year, and as a result, there is just not enough water to raft on. The Delegation of the Water of the Atuel River said there is a limited amount of irrigation water available for agriculture this season, so they will be unable to release even the smallest amount of water down the river that would allow tourists to raft for 2-3 hours a day. The Chamber of Tourism in Mendoza will have to refund tourist packages that included rafting and will lose out on a great deal of business this winter.
