Worst Drought in 40 Years Hits Northeastern Brazil Economy Hard

On March 22, 2013, Jornal da Globo reported about the drought in the Brazilian northeast this past January/February. Nine hundred people from 36 rural communities have banded together in the state of Piauí to create honey as an alternative to raise money for the water they cannot use to raise neither cattle nor crops. The year 2012 marked the tenth year in a row that rainfall totals were below average during the dry season. Jornal da Globo also managed to speak with Manoel Marcelino Rodrigues, a man who searches for water four times per day in order to feed his cattle.
