WFP Update Ecuador Since Earthquake 2016

Monitoring of WFP’s earthquake response indicate a significant improvement in the share of households with acceptable food consumption.
Virtually all assisted households were lifted out of food insecurity.

WFP continues to strengthen its relationship with the Government to explore opportunities for cooperation in 2017.

The Government of Ecuador approved WFP’s Country Strategic Plan 2017-2021.

WFP has reached a total number of 234,000 people in need through its earthquake response.

WFP and the Ministry of Environment are finalizing the application to the Adaptation Fund for the Project “Building adaptive capacity to climate change through food security and nutrition actions in vulnerable Afro and indigenous communities in the Colombia-Ecuador border area”. Delegates from the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador and Colombia, WFP staff, and Awá and Afro descendant delegations met in Pasto, Colombia, to dialogue and receive inputs for the elaboration of the project.

WFP, and humanitarian actors involved in the earthquake response, participated in meetings organized by OCHA to evaluate the response and the role of the Humanitarian Country Team, as well as its collaboration with the Government of Ecuador during the emergency.

WFP met with the Risk Management Secretariat and the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion to explore opportunities of cooperation, and the development of an emergency preparedness and response strategy for 2017.

A delegation from HQ and the Regional Bureau visited Ecuador to lead the Lessons Learned Exercise of the Ecuador L2 Emergency Response to identify best practices and areas of improvement to enhance future emergency responses.

WFP Country Director Kyungnan Park participated in a breakfast with media where the SDGs were presented. The main objective is to promote the inclusion of the SDGs in the presidential candidates’ plans. Read Full Release
