Veracruz, Mexico: Capital of Migrant Kidnappings

A report from the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH) shows that the state of Veracruz has the highest number of kidnappings of undocumented immigrants, according to Noticias Net. The agency’s first report in 2009 estimated that 2,944 kidnappings of migrants occurred in Veracruz between September 2008 and February 2009. The last report showed a dramatic increase in 2010, with an estimated 11,333 kidnappings during a six-month period. One activist called Veracruz a “paradise” for the organized crime groups who kidnap migrants, also stating that the local police have exacerbated the situation by covering up the situations and lying on reports.
