Venezuelan prisons have alarming levels of violence according to IACHR

Overcrowding, corruption and lack of control mechanisms and basic services in Latin American prisons foster a “systematic violation” of human rights of prisoners, denounced the Commission.

The first report on Persons Deprived of Liberty in 2011, released today by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), notes that overcrowding in prisons is the most serious problem that affects “the overwhelming majority of countries in the region “.

That problem is behind many of the tragedies that happen in Latin American prisons, as fire in recent months in Honduras, although violence between inmates is also another important factor, as is the case in Venezuela. Read Article
