Venezuela halts oil shipments to Paraguay and recalls ambassador

Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, said last Sunday that he ordered to halt oil shipments to Paraguay and recalled Venezuela’s ambassador in Asuncion after the impeachment of former president Fernando Lugo which he called a coup. While oil exports from Venezuela represent 27 percent of oil consumption in Paraguay, Sergio Escobar, head of state-owned Petropar, said to Reuters that contracts with other companies guarantee the provision of oil to Paraguay.
