Uruguay officials seek cause of Penguin deaths
The National Directorate of Aquatic Resources (DINARA) in Uruguay is taking action to discover the cause of death of 140 penguins this week in Cabo Polonio, along with another 300 that were found dead in Maldonado and Rocha. The department is seeking the advice of an Argentine expert to determine if there have been any changes in the climate and ocean currents, the most common cause of penguin deaths this time of year, according to elpais.com.uy. DINARA is concerned, however, that the deaths may be connected to the 2,000 bags of toxic waste that washed up on the San Francisco beach, Uruguay last week. A team of firefighters specialized in the dealing with hazardous material have been sent to analyze the waste. If it produces a hazardous substance called phosphine, it could be the cause of the deaths.
