Tapachula Chiapas Mexico: 58 percent of women engaged in prostitution are from Guatemala, many are underaged

In Tapachula 58 percent of women engaged in prostitution are Guatemalan and 95 percent of them are between 15 and 19 years old, announced Miriam Gonzalez, a member of the Institute for Women in Migration. Regarding the high number of underage prostitutes, the specialist said that this is also an issue related to human trafficking because they are frightened to take a fee, otherwise they are blackmailed with being deported to their place of origin.
He added that this situation of fear by the lack of various proposals for the protection of migrant women who feel vulnerable to remain silent and not report. He acknowledged that the municipal, state and federal are aware of what happens in the states that border, but little work they do to ensure their human rights. Read Article
