Study Outlines Deforestation Practices/Perspectives in Acre, Brazil

On February 9, 2013, Notícias do Acre did a report on deforestation practices within the state of Acre, in the extreme northwest of Brazil.  The report states that deforestation in Acre accounted for some 20.000 square kilometers, which represents about 2.7% of the Amazon region and about 13.7% of the state.  The report also states that the rate of deforestation is still in decline, when one compares to the rates of 10 years ago.  The rate has grown in recent years, but the report also points to the administrations of Binho Marques and Tião Viana as possible causes of relaxed restrictions.  Read Article
