Around 2:30 a.m. on May 28, armed groups stormed into the Esmeralda colony of the Las Flores neighborhood in Zacapa and fired weapons for six minutes. Zacapa is home to 232,667 residents and is one of the country’s drug entry points. Officials believe the shootout is related to a dispute over drug routes in the area, Siglo 21 reports. Los Zetas are thought to be involved. Two men known to belong to one of the drug trafficking groups involved in the dispute were arrested when authorities arrived on the scene. These men, Wilmer Noé Sagastume (23) and Édgar Efraín Vargas Ramírez (32) had previously participated in a kidnapping. Residents in the neighborhood hid under beds or behind appliances to avoid bullets. One witness claims three vehicles passed through the area, from which the shooting began. Shortly after, about 10 men dressed in ski masks and dressed in police or military uniforms arrived and joined in the shooting. Authorities arrived minutes later.
