São Paulo, Brazil: Police Investigate Use of Social Networks to Exploit Guns and Drugs

Globo reported on May 28, 2013 that the Civil Police of São Paulo are investigating posted photos of adolescents posing with guns and drugs on social networks such as Facebook and Orkut. Police suggest this has become a new trend predominantly in the poor communities of large Brazilian cities. Lawyer Victor Haikel claims that such use of images of guns and drugs on the internet is considered a crime if used as an attempt to convince someone to engage in criminal activity. For example, a previous case included a post on Facebook to persuade others to join an attack on a bus in result to a criminal suspect killed by the Military Police. The Brazilian Penal Code states individuals can be imprisoned three to six months or face a fine for such activity.Read Article
